EGOS Standing Working Group on Expertise in & Around Organizations (2025-2028)

I am also part of the coordination team for EGOS SWG 08: Expertise in and around Organizations running 2025-2028. We aim to create an inclusive space where ideas are exchanged based on scholarly values and research interests—beyond rank and across intellectual traditions. Our goal is to put the phenomena at the center and in conversation with various topics like technology, organization, occupations, social change.

Multi-Disciplinary Workshop on Lay Expertise 2025

Together with my colleague Oddný Helgadóttir, I’m organizing a small in-person workshop on “Lay Expertise: Empirical Studies of Lay Social Knowledge”, to be held at Copenhagen Business School on 29–30 October 2025.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers from across the social sciences who study how non-traditional "experts"—from citizen scientists and political influencers to patient advocates and financial YouTubers—produce, circulate, and contest knowledge outside formal institutions. We're open to empirical work from areas such as management, sociology, political economy, STS, anthropology, history, education, law, media studies, and beyond.

The format will be collaborative, with roundtable discussions, feedback on work-in-progress, and ample time for informal conversation. It will also include a keynote by Professor Steven Epstein (Northwestern University).

AOM PDW Classics of Organization and Management Theory

I have organized four editions of a workshop at the Academy of Management (AOM) annual conference on classics in organization and management theory. The goal of the event is to spark reflections on the relevance of earlier scholarship for current academic work.

2022 PDW: Approaches to the Study of Work

The fourth edition explored key approaches to the study of work. It featured presentations by Steve Barley on the work of the Chicago School tradition of study on work and occupations; Gina Dokko on traditions of research into employment and careers; Ingrid Erickson on the Computer Supported Collaborative Work tradition; and Davide Nicolini on the Tavistock Institute and associated socio-technical systems tradition

The third edition explored the foundational work of female scholars to the field of organization and management theory. It featured presentations by Marta Calás on Edith Penrose; Lisa Cohen on Rosabeth Moss Kanter; Martha Feldman on Susan Leigh Star; Maja Korica on Rosemary Stewart; Maria José Tonelli on Isabel Menzies Lyth; and Emmanuelle Vaast on Jean Lave.

2019 PDW: The Contingency Approach

The second edition explored the contingency approach as exemplary of classic scholarship in organization and management theory. Specifically, the historical context of the contingency approach, the main ideas of some authors and traditions associated with it, and their connections with contemporary research. It includes  presentations by Gino Cattani on James D. Thompson; Sarah Kaplan on Joan Woodward; and Signe Vikkelso on Tavistock and Socio-Technical Systems.

Ethnography Atelier

I am a member of the Ethnography Atelier, a collaborative space that promotes ethnographic and other qualitative research in work and organizations. We organize online and off-line opportunities for researchers to discuss and develop each other's work and share resources to foster engagement with a variety of qualitative methods.
