Bureaucracy & Formal
Organizational Structures

My research agenda centers on the study of bureaucracy and formal organization elements such as formalization, organizational structure, authority relations, etc. In particular, I explore how they shape (knowledge) work and organizational processes. This echoes a (neo) classical  attention to organizational structure and intra-organizational dynamics merged with the sensitivity of the current practice-based studies.

This research programme emerged from my doctoral research and I am currently planning future studies which may help us understand the nature of bureaucracy in contemporary corporations and its implications for collaboration, innovation and effective operations. My hope is to enable us to leverage the benefits of bureaucracy (which are usually overlooked) while preventing its shortcomings.

EGOS 2019: Sub-theme on Bureaucracy and Formal Organization
Together with Paul du Gay and Signe Vikkelso, I am convening a sub-theme at EGOS 2019 (Edinburgh) about bureaucracy and  formal organization dynamics — with a particular attention to classic scholarship.
